The short answer

Choose Zendesk for a ticket-led operation; compare Intercom when website and in-app conversations come first. On annual billing, five Zendesk Suite Team agents cost $275 per month. Five Intercom Essential seats, with chat and ticketing, cost $145; Advanced costs $425 and adds workflows and team routing. These are seat costs, not like-for-like feature bundles or total bills: budget separately for AI, channels and add-ons.

The six differences that decide it

Everything else on this page follows from these.

  1. 01

    Where a conversation starts

    ZendeskZendesk

As a ticket. Every channel, chat included, becomes a ticket with a status, a priority and an SLA clock.

    IntercomIntercom

As a message in the Messenger, with ticketing available from Essential.

  2. 02

    What the seat buys

    ZendeskZendesk

$19 buys email and tickets. Live chat, WhatsApp, Instagram and AI agents start at Suite Team, $55.

    IntercomIntercom

$29 buys the inbox, Messenger and ticketing. Advanced at $85 adds workflows and round-robin routing.

  3. 03

    How the AI is billed

    ZendeskZendesk

AI agents are priced per automated resolution on top of seats, and the rate comes from your quote.

    IntercomIntercom

Fin is $0.99 or more per outcome on every plan, printed on the pricing page, on top of seats.

  4. 04

    Channels in the price

    ZendeskZendesk

Email, chat, WhatsApp, Instagram and voice on Suite plans; WhatsApp conversation fees still apply.

    IntercomIntercom

Messenger and email on every plan; WhatsApp, SMS and phone are pay-as-you-go lines.

  5. 05

    Beyond the inbox

    ZendeskZendesk

A contact center: voice, workforce management, QA, and a marketplace of over a thousand apps.

    IntercomIntercom

Product tours, banners, surveys and outbound campaigns; Proactive Support Plus is $99 a month.

  6. 06

    Time to the first reply

    ZendeskZendesk

A project. Queue, SLAs, routing and macros are set up before the first ticket is answered.

    IntercomIntercom

An afternoon for a website-first team: install the Messenger, invite the team, answer.

Which one, for whom

Pick Zendesk if

  • Your support is ticket-first and email-heavy, with SLAs and a queue to manage.
  • You need phone support and a contact center in the same tool.
  • You want the biggest app marketplace and enterprise compliance options.

Pick Intercom if

  • Your support lives in the website messenger and in-app, and you want product tours and outbound messages in the same tool.
  • Fin's AI quality matters more to you than its per-outcome price.
  • You want the most polished Messenger on the market.

The third option: Sellio

  • You are two to ten people who answer chat, messaging and email, and you want one price that does not climb with each hire.
  • You want the AI bill known in advance: an included credit, a daily answer cap and a monthly token cap, then a handover to a person.
  • You need Telegram, which neither includes natively, or native Windows and macOS apps, which neither ships.

Can you use Intercom and Zendesk together?

Yes, and some teams do. Intercom's Zendesk integration turns a Messenger conversation into a Zendesk ticket, and Intercom now sells Fin as an AI agent that sits on top of a Zendesk help desk, billed per outcome. You pay both invoices, and two tools hold two halves of every customer's history. For a small team that is the strongest case for one tool that does both jobs.

Zendesk Chat, Zopim and the Messenger

Zendesk bought Zopim in 2014 and renamed it Zendesk Chat; it lives on as the messaging inside Zendesk Suite rather than as a product you buy on its own. So a Zendesk Chat vs Intercom search is really Suite Team at $55 per agent against Intercom Essential at $29 or Advanced at $85, with the Messenger the more polished of the two widgets.

How to decide in an afternoon

  1. Step 1

    Count agents and channels

Anyone who replies is a seat. List the channels customers actually use.

    5 people reply5 seats
    Website chat61%
    WhatsApp27%
    Email12%
  2. Step 2

Price the AI you would use

Estimate monthly conversations the AI could close, then apply each vendor's per-resolution or per-session rate.

    1,200 conversations × 40% AI closes480
    ZendeskZendeskAssumed $1.5$720
    IntercomIntercom$0.99$475
    Sellio$0.05$19

Illustrative AI-only estimate; vendor units differ. Pack billing is rounded up. Sellio assumes Mini’s $5 credit and $0.05 per conversation.

  3. Step 3

    Trial the shortlist

Check each vendor’s trial, free plan or demo terms. Where access is available, test one real channel before committing.

ZendeskZendesk · 14-day trial of Suite Professional
IntercomIntercom · 14-day trial, no card
Sellio · Free plan, no card

Confirm trial access and limits, then evaluate one real channel on each.
